We Like This TV Ad

I like this ad because I'm jealous of it. I wish I wrote it.

Real Canadian Superstore is a chain of supermarkets here in Canada, and this cheeky ad uses some great language to convince us that they're "more super" than other stores.

Take a look for yourself, at this YouTube link. But remember to come back!

I always appreciate scripts that make me wish I was "in the room" when ideas were being tossed around. Especially when you know that outstanding, creative phrases that would normally end up in the garbage actually made it into the script.

This ad has plenty of those silly kinds of lines, such as:

"Apples crisper than the crack of a bullwhip. Giddyup"

"Prices so low, you say...Aw, what the heck, Karen, have some shrimp with that steak"

"Bed linens so soft, you'll wonder "Where are the fondue pots?" And then, there they are"

This ad also wins in the way it uses those funny, clever lines. They're not just throw-away sentences. They actually describe the store quite well. Sure, Real Canadian Superstore is a grocery store. But they also sell housewares. And, yes, they also sell fondue pots.

And this ad's got some great visuals, too. There's a man rubbing bed linens on his cheek. That same man shares a picnic with the love of his life and the aforementioned fondue pot. A retiree shakes his head in disgust at something that is not super at all. There's a cowboy. And Karen runs towards us with a vegetable skewer and a juicy T-bone steak.

In the span of 60 seconds, this ad makes me laugh...and it does a great job of conveying that Real Canadian Superstore sells pretty much everything everything, from bananas to bed linens.

Is the store super? Maybe.

Is the ad super? You betcha.
